Track and weather conditions
Description of the tracks (road, landscape)
Canberra, the capital of Australia, is a relatively young city, planned from its inception in 1908 to be the capital city. Because of its youth, the city is a showcase of modern architecture and landscaping. Being the capital, it is also the home of many national centres and monuments such as Parliament House, the National Library, the National Art Gallery, the National Museum, the Australian National Botanic Gardens and the War Memorial. The many hills in and around the main city area have also been maintained as nature parks, providing the city with its famous "bush" setting. There are superb vistas. Each day's routes take walkers on the extensive network of recreation paths through some of those many nature parks, where walkers may see a variety of Canberra's birds and even the occasional kangaroo. The routes also take walkers past some of the various national centres, institutions and monuments. Although routes are changed slightly each year to showcase different aspects of Canberra, each year's routes pass two of Canberra's most famous landmarks. These are the foreshore of Lake Burley Griffin - the centre piece of Canberra, named after the Chicago architect who won the international competition for the design of Canberra in 1913 - and Parliament House, one of the great examples of modern architecture, which is open for walkers to visit. In addition to the IML Walking Association qualifying 20km and 30km routes, which include some hilly sections, there are flatter 10 and 5 km routes for the frailer and/or less adventurous. For information on tourist attractions see www.visitcanberra.com.au
Care along the road
Water and cordial is provided at all checkpoints (about every 5 km) and some routes also pass adjacent to shops.
A first aid officer (and transport) will be in attendance at the Control Centre. A scout troop operates a canteen at the Control Centre.
Entertainment
A (free) welcome party for overseas walkers and invited Australian walkers is held on the Friday evening.
A Walkers' Dinner (cost applies) is held on Saturday evening.
Weather
The weather will be sunny and may still be quite warm. Daytime average temperatures are generally around 20 deg C, but may be as high as 28 deg C. Night-time temperatures may be as low as 4 deg C.

Souvenir - award
All walkers completing any route are given a personalised certificate. The Canberra Two Day Walk Medal award may also be gained if the walker successfully completes the specified "medal" route distance for his or her age on both days. The event is sanctioned by the IMLWA and the IVV.
