Track and weather conditions
The Castlebar International Four Days’ Walks invite you to their Annual Walking Festival, to walk and talk and to discover and share the bogs, rivers, mountains and unspoilt beaty of the West of Ireland. Our walks offer a wide choice of routes to suit all levels of fitness. On each of the four days we have a 10, 20 and 40km road walk and a ramble of approximately 6 hours.

Description of the 10, 20 and 40km routes:

You will walk these enjoying the peace and quiet of Ireland’s ‘boreens’ or country roads. Many of the roads on this route are quiet with some traffic.  Each walker is provided with a map of the route and there are arrows to guide the walker.  There are also rest points along the route.

Description of the Ramble (30 km)
There is also the cross-country Ramble, which head into the hilly countryside north of Castlebar. The Ramble is approximately 30km and follows quiet roads and forest tracks, as well as crossing bogs and heather moorland where the ground can be wet underfoot. These are the most popular of all the walks at Castlebar, led by local walkers with a rich knowledge of Ireland’s unique landscape. On a clear day you can see forever.
Good care:
must be taken along the road.
Weather:
Ireland experiences a maritime climate so walkers may experience some inclement weather, it is advisable for walkers to bring rain gear.  Boots and a change of stockings may be necessary on the Ramble.
Entertainment
The entire entertainment programme takes place in the Failte Suite in the Welcome Inn Hotel.  Walkers are invited to join us each afternoon and night to enjoy a varied programme of music and entertainment from traditional Irish music and dancing to jazz. The event concludes with a ‘Blister Ball’ on Sunday night.
Enjoy legendary Irish hospitality, food, drink and music, in the unspoiled Irish countryside.
Everything starts on Wednesday evening with an informal get together where walkers can register and there is a short but important briefing.  This is followed by an exhibition of Irish dancing by Mayo’s award winning Cresham School of Dancing.
You may sing a song as you walk; but save some of your energy for the evening entertainment.

Souvenir - award
First-time walkers at Castlebar receive a bronze medal; after five years you receive a silver medal; then after ten years a gold medal.
Sanctioned by IML and IVV.
