Track and weather conditions
Description
of the tracks: (road, landscape)
Saturday signals Day One of the walks (10, 20, 30Km) through
the 'Redwoods' forest reserve and the fully operational exotic
'Whakarewarewa' forest. The network of spectacular tracks will
let you explore some of New Zealand's finest bush and forest
scenery with its majestic trees and ferns and lush undergrowth
as well as glorious views of the landscape.
Sunday is Day Two of the walks (10, 20, 30km) through the city
and residential suburbs. The routes will go through city parks
and gardens, active geothermal reserves, along the Rotorua
lakeshore, beside a bird sanctuary, and take in other points
of scenic and cultural interest.
Good care along the road:
Non-alcoholic drinks are provided en-route at many marshal
stations but be aware that the drinks may not always be there
where or when you need them. First aid kits are available at
the headquarters.
Entertainment:
The Two Day Walk weekend kicks off on Friday evening with
an official opening and civic reception hosted by the Mayor
of Rotorua and features a traditional Maori welcome followed
by a short street walk. Afterwards, in free time, walkers and
friends can move out to the check-in centre for a social evening
hosted by the Dutch Club. Saturday night is the chance to kick
up your heels for a fun evening with other walkers at the 'Two
Day Walk' buffet dinner with live entertainment and spot prizes.
The Weather:
Typically warm and dry late NZ summer daytime conditions but
not unknown to have an occasional shower. Can be cool enough
in evenings to need to wear a sweater.
Souvenir - Award
All participants that complete
the two days are presented with the special Rotorua Two Day
Walk medal. The event finishes with a short official closing
and awards presentation ceremony and farewell to all walkers.
